Fatty acids are important for all systems of the body to function normally. They help our skin, respiratory system, circulatory system, brain and organs. There are two fatty acids, termed essential fatty acids (EFA) that your body does not produce on its own. EFAs have to be ingested.

The two essential fatty acids that the human body cannot produce are the Omega-3 fatty acid and Omega-6 fatty acid, which are important for brain development, immune system function and blood pressure regulation.

Omega-9 is a non-essential fatty acid produced naturally by the body whenever there is enough of either Omega-3 and 6. However, if you do not have enough Omega-3 or 6, then you must get Omega-9 from your diet which plays a role in lowering cholesterol levels and improving immune function.

A. Although yoga involves stretching your muscles, it is a whole different ballgame than the few warm-up stretches you might do at the gym. Let's look at a few of the ways yoga is different:
- Yoga places emphasis on alignment, meaning that how you are touching your toes is more important than whether you can actually touch them or not.
- Most yoga poses are not stretching an isolated area, but rather involve the whole body in both stretching and strengthening.
- Many of today?s most popular yoga styles are vinyasa/flow. This means there is movement from pose to pose with an awareness of the breath, making this style of yoga very fluid.
- Asana, or the physical practice of postures, in only one aspect of a yoga practice, albeit the most well-known one these days.

Even if you only engage in yoga through asana practice (an excellent place to start), be aware of the eight limbs of yoga.

Yogi tea, also called masala tea, is used to warm and stimulate digestion after a meal, as well as nourish the body, mind, and spirit. Yogi tea consists of four primary spices: cardamom, ginger, long pepper, and cinnamon. Cardamom and ginger are considered sattvic, believed to stimulate spiritual purity. They also help reduce mucus, calm the stomach, and eliminate toxins. Long pepper helps reduce pain and rejuvenates tissue. Cinnamon is similar to cardamom and is also good for the circulation and the heart.

Boil two quarts of water. Add one-half tablespoon long pepper, one heaping tablespoon cardamom seeds, six sticks of cinnamon, and four slices of fresh ginger root, peeled. Reduce the heat and let the spice mixture simmer for 30 minutes. Add one and one-half teaspoons black tea and then let steep for no longer than 10 minutes. Strain and add milk, honey, or maple syrup to taste.

Many people are finding Pilates an excellent choice for preventing or managing posture related back problems. But how does it fare for back pain, when compared to yoga?

Believe it or not, Pilates came from yoga (along with martial arts and other rigorous physical disciplines). Joe Pilates, born in the late 1800s and living into the mid-20th century, was sickly as a child. He took up anything he could find to help build his strength ,and yoga was part of his routine. As a person working on his own individual path to health, he was acutely aware of the need for a strong set of core muscles. For him, yoga lacked this important feature. The Pilates exercises were developed when Joe evolved yoga postures in such a way as to challenge the trunk muscles.

An example of a yoga posture that may have been adapted for Pilates is the elephant. The elephant is done on the reformer, a specialized piece of Pilates equipment, and looks a lot like Downward Facing Dog pose. Although the elephant takes place in the same position as Down Dog, it feels quite different while you are performing it; done correctly it releases tension in the low back, increases awareness of the shoulder girdle, and can get you to walk away with very sore abdominal muscles.

That is not to say yoga does not strengthen core posture muscles. But working the core is a key primary intention of Pilates, while in yoga it is one of a number of benefits. Both systems will increase flexibility, strength, balance and coordination. Both can be helpful in reducing or preventing back or neck pain. It may come down to personal preference, as quite often yoga provides the opportunity for a spiritual experience, while Pilates stays mainly in the physical realm.
